It's a good thing actually. There are many other games better than pokemon

I plan to return many years later, after the franchise is ruined and they have to remodel it from scratch and reinstate the national pokedex

There is now absolutely 0 reasons to get both versions on switch. Switch can have multiple saves via accounts.

And each account needs its own Switch Online sub to work (which means its own Home sub as well, I can't see them letting you connect multiple NNID's to one Home system). Stellar plan there chopsticks.
