The longer I look at Moltres, the worse it looks.
At first I thought it was just a cool firebird. But now it just looks like big rubber chicken.

The anime had the right idea initially portraying him as taking form from the fire, rather than the other way around, in which case the simple rubber chicken isn't the focus. Looking at his sprites Gen 2 was the only one that tried that.

I am wondering how much would have changed, given some of the things that hurt Articuno later on being outside itself. And feeling a bit stupid for saying so as I ponder a not-slow tank with a resting 125 Special Attack and 2 great STABS.

All three usually look slightly lame in official art or the anime or whatever. I'm not even one who prefers Gen 1 sprites over everything in general, but at least there they can look more related to their elements through being more abstract rather than solid-colored plastic birds.

I think Articuno looks less dumb than Moltres in art but even then it has too much of a flat blue color or something. I guess I like the concepts of the birds more than their actual designs.

Yeah, I guess if you wanted to make the argument of which pokemon git hurt the most by the art style's shift away from watercolor and sprites with only two colors, white and black, it would he the legendary birds.
I like zapdos's sprite in yellow for this.
