The most fun part of the idea of riding Pokémon is to ride your own. This is problem number one with Poké Ride - it's NOT your own Pokémon
Now, to be fair, I wouldn't expect every or even most Pokémon to be ridden because that would be a lot of work for something that isn't terribly important.
However, just giving you someone else's doesn't work either. You've no attachment to it and they have been breeding attachment to their Pokémon into players so they NEED that for it to be accepted.
But you could. Imagine that otherwise big empty ranch was a place you could call those rentals in and fix them up with some customization. That would also take care of your issue because they could've allowed you to do the same to your ride gear or even opt out of it there. And hell, attach a minigame in Refresh to each one on top of it and you've got yourself a Pokémon you've got a connection to. An idea that only just came to me while typing this but it makes sense.
And it wouldn't necessarily only have to be used there either because oh man, good ideas keep flowing suddenly. That would've been a lot more effective even in the Agency, actually. If you could've bonded with the Ride Pokémon and they became available there with a level based on your relationship with them so you weren't stuck with Level 50 shitters in the Agency because the faggots online are either Rank 2 or dead.
