The sidequest was GF being passive aggressive towards their older, longtime fans. Its basically telling you to move on from the franchise.

It's all the faggots who rush through the game then call it a "hallway simulator". I skipped SM, but USUM has more sidequests than HGSS and BW2 and it's pretty damn fun if you actually take your time playing it.
