Charizard just looks cool and that's it. In fact, it arguably doesn't even look cool without the sprite limitations forcing you to use your imagination to fill in the blanks. Really, the idea of raising a little salamander into a firebreathing, flying dragon to be your best friend was cool.
Even back in gen 1, Charizard was the worst starter, in competitive and especially in-game.

How? How is the Flintstones anyone's favorite show? I'm not even totally convinced it WAS a show. Nothing happened in any of the seasons, it was never funny or otherwise entertaining. It just existed and sold products. Even now, you'll have better luck finding gummy vitamins for kids who've never seen or heard of the show than you will an episode of it.
