Bottom looks like your dime-a-dozen RPG Maker fangame. Top looks like it's really just a loading screen but I'd still rather have the latter. Top-down grid based exploration is fine on SNES-era hardware, but on modern hardware unless they shoot for a stylized aesthetic it's just going to make the game look as primitive as it already plays.
I think the happy medium would be top-down, no grid, reasonable-looking environments but stylized humans, and battled that have dynamic camera angles. Think like the Genius Sonority titles only the humans don't look like bush babies.
