The series that's most popular in Japan is the gag manga Pocket Monsters which is also the oldest series that started serialization around the time Red and Green came out. It's juvenile Japanese humor generally involving shit, testicles, grotesque art, and the general absurdity of the characters, but it doesn't take itself seriously and focuses more on gags than story. If you want something with good writing, then you're shit outta luck. Essentially every Pokémon manga that has ever existed exists because an advertising executive at Shogakukan wanted it. Shogakukan has full control over all Pokémon manga, and its name literally translates to "Elementary School House", which is its primary demographic.
