Meowth originally didn't have limb arms it used to be more cat like. They changed its design most likely because of Anime Meowth.
Anime Meowth was unlike any other Meowth more human-like, while still similar to others of his kind with the time they made his limbs thinner probably so he could use gadgets better. We can his Yellow Sprite reflect that, however somewhere along the transition of Gen 2-3 they made other Meowths more like him and by Gen 4 we can see the change was done completely.

The anime has access to all the original design sheets and turnarounds. Tbh the anime's proportions are considerably more accurate than the gen 6 3D models, despite fuckups like a baby Nidoqueen and Charizard's height.

It also didn’t have a definitive solid body at one point. Tangela, Jynx, and Ghastly all had that much in common. Would have saved them a lot of controversy if they never redesigned Jynx by accident. Also now that Tangela has an inner core, Tangrowth ends up looking like an uncircumcised chode

I've heard that, especially with the early generations of pokemon, the sprites were made first and sugimori used those sprites, refined them and produced the canonical official designs.
This is why charmander originally had bumps on his back. Sugimori either didn't notice these or chose to remove them from the refined final design.
Can anyone confirm this?
