The actual climax of the series is Ash winning the league by defeating Gladion, while Lillie maybe gets a Magearna and does nothing with it, which sounds exactly like what you'd expect from a Lillie "arc"

Actually Lillie is way closer to being in the direct center of the card. She's also in the middle of the group since she's the third person in a group of five. Lana is just in the middle of the girls, probably for aesthetic purposes. Maybe the artist thought it would have been awkward to have her on the side. She's framed in nicely between the two taller girls.
