Why do they still sell 2 versions of the same game when the GTS exists? Is it to encourage trading? Is there a way to work around this and have 1 version and still encourage trading?

Trading was never an issue, even if version exclusives didn't exist, you would still have things like starters, fossils, and trade evos you have to trade for.

Anon, even if there WAS a way, Game Freak wouldn't care and would still release 2 versions. The fact they're doing version exclusive gym leaders now is proof of this.

Wasn't that why breeding was introduced? Because you didn't used to be able to fill a dex unless you had someone or another game plus gameboy to reset their game a couple of times for starters. Not counting the prize pokemon you could get in pokemon stadium.

Have a pool of 'exclusives' that randomise and give you a certain number that you can catch per save file. All the rest must be traded to that save file.
