Too late to change it with a new Gen on the way, but they heard one message loud and clear - the fanbase wanted to see Ash/Satoshi win a League and with Alola having a newly-formed League in-game, the writers had a way to give him a League win, without worrying about having to avoid the extra trappings of a League win (E4/Champion battles rounds) any other longer-running League would demand (MR battle is acting as this however, but already stated to be an exhibition merely).
