nope around then stuff like Ben10 and Minecraft were far more popular, Pokemon didn't come close. Until gen 6 you could barely find pokemon merch in shops here, halfway through gen 3 they just gave up on selling anything pokemon related because it just wasn't popular with kids.

it's been creatively bankrupt (in terms of gameplay design) for a long fucking time at this point. monster designs have always been hit or miss but since gen 5 NOTHING of value has been added in the actual gameplay
