In my playthrough I swapped through a bunch of mons like Koffing, Leavanny, Darumaka, Sigilyph, Scolipede and Sawsbuck (who was actually pretty based). Unfortunate truth is shitmons don't beat Iris when she has 15+ levels on you, so I settled on generic bros by the late game.

HG, just beat the E4 and on my way to Kanto.
I traded over Lucario for Close Combat on my
intimidate Granbull. When I got to the E4 I wasn't impressed with Johto's available fighting nor poison type selections, so I bred a dry skin Cross Chop Croagunk and toughed out all that grinding. I was still getting shit on by Karen's Houndoom and Lance's Dragonites, so I dug up the skull fossil and grinded up Crandios for Head Smash to breed onto my rock head Aron, and now here we are.

Speak for yourself. Unova shitmons aren't that shit, they can carry you if they have a goodish nature. Not that being generic = being good, Swanna being the prime example

Just use hoenn obscure mons. Most people use the same starter + gardevoir + manectric core in RSE, everything other than that will be fine deep sea tooth clamperl

Not on challenge mode they can't. Especially with my added rules of no healing during battles or in gyms/the league.

Swanna was largely so I could have a Surf mon for routes that use it (used Jellicent and Seismitoad in past playthroughs).
