Onix/Steelix: Switch to Rock/Dragon and Steel/Dragon. The look Draconic, use Dragon moves, and Ground/Rock is oversaturated.

Flygon: Do I really have to say it?

The Birbs: Make them pure Flying. Besides the fact we have no real mono-flying types anyway, it makes no sense to have them part normal without a pure flying type for them to be more "normal" in relation to.

Honestly there shouldn't be any non-mono Normals. Nothing about Drampa is "Normal" more than any other dragon, Why is a Fire Lion normal but a Fire Horse isn't?

This. Normal is a default classification for non-elemental, ordinary creatures in literally every other JRPG. If it has wind-based powers, it’s not Normal, even if it just looks like a bird.

I've long been convinced the part-normal mons are part-spite, part-refusal to admit mistakes, on the part of gamefreak. It's widely known that the Flying/Normal types exist in Gen 1 because when the Dragon type was added at the final moment of development, memory/storage concerns meant that another type had to go, so the "Bird" Type and the "Flying" type were merged into the unified flying type we all know and love. The part-normal designation was to keep the birds in their own separate bird type even if the actually type was gone. It's also why in Gen 1 all Flying type moves are bird related like peck (because they were the old bird type moves) but all the wind moves like Gust were normal (the original no-birds-allowed flying type moves had to go somewhere). Of course people have pointed out this stupidity for years, until in Gen 6 with it's retroactive Fairy type all of a sudden by "coincidence" a bunch of mons are now part normal for no reason. It's transparently and attempt by Gamefreak to say "No! Part-Normals are totally intentional! It's you who's the idiot for pointing out it makes no sense!"

Fire lion is secondary Normal bc it uses its voice to attack. That's why Hyper Voice and Boomburst are Normal. That's why Jigglypuff retained Normal while Clefairy didn't.

If we changed all birds to Flying, there would be some precedence to make Chatot Flying/Normal in that case, and probably even Swellow too.

Swellow can learn Boomburst, and it also has an emphasis on speed, which is the other Special normal move type: Razor Wind, Swift. That's why Helioptile has secondary Normal.

Flying type should be retooled altogether. Just being a bird or a creature that flies shouldn't prevent you of having two typings without having to sacrifice your ability for 1 immunity. Hitting with a beak or a wing shouldn't be any less normal than a tackle or a scratch.
Whether a Pokemon can fly or not should be an innate trait different from an ability. So many potential designs can't work because they need to have the Flying-type/Levitate stuck on them. Unless they are like Volcarona, where we ignore the fact they can fly altogether, even if it doesn't make any sense.

I feel like the difference they're trying to make is that the Normal/Whatever types are Normal Pokemon who happen to also do X, vs pokemon for which that type is a core element.

Like Bibarel as a Normal/Water I get, it's semiaquatic and is fine on land. Being aquatic isn't as importatant for it as it is for Staryu or Piplup or whatever, okay, fine. It's inconsistent but that's my rationale.

In regards to all the Normal talk, I think it’s partly just Gamefreak trying to give Normal its own identity. Yes, it’s the realm of non-elemental monsters, but it also encompasses sound-based attacks (see Pyroar, Jigglypuff lines). I’m fine with it, as it allows for more diverse typing. I do not believe, though, that the name “Normal” captures the essence of what the type is anymore.

I mean, poor example because the fire horse is literally on fire. But my retarded headcanon is that the fire lion also has some dominion over sound-based attacks, much like the fairy balloon.
In Drampa’s case, it seems like there’s the possibility it acts as a Normal type unless it gets enraged, which is when its latent draconic powers come out.

If you manage to put two and two together you will realize that the depths that turn rock to steel(Steelix) is deeper than the one turning dirt to rock(Roggenrola). There is also no mention of Roggenrola digging anything itself, nor the evolutions, so no reason for them to be Ground, they simply inhabit preexisting caves.

Fairy is more folkloric, ghost/spirit, magic from nature - moon and flowers, deceptive, trickster

Meowstic has telekinetic powers
Cosmog line and Necrozma are cosmic
Hoopa wraps space
Oricorio puts you in trace
Oranguru is intelligent
Malamar is hypnotic
Brixish grew a space radar from it's head

Delphox is a witch, it is factually magical, but I assume it got the type because of Dark/Fighting/Psychic trio because fairy would be much more fitting
