Is it truly over for me if I don't have a favourite Pokémon, or even type?
Every single damn thread has people talking about their favourite mons, but I just looked through all of my old teams, and the entire dex and felt... nothing. I'm completely neutral to the entire dex.
I just wanna be a kid again, bros.

take on a nuzlocke challenge in your favorite generation. play it all the way through. experience the emotional beats and triumphs/failures of it, and when you're done, look at which 'mon impressed you the most. the one that always pulled through in battles and shit on gym leaders/rival battles.

at least, that's how i found my favorite. was indisputable for me from that point forward.

Nah it's normal, when people say favorite it doesn't have to be a strong feeling just the one you like the most, some anons sure love their favorites though.
Your favorite type is probably the one you like using the most.
It took me until Gen 5 to realize what my favorite was so don't push yourself.

i did my first nuzlocke in frlg because i wanted to start gen1 but also wanted gen3 sound font. jolteon cleaned my rival's team, was a net to fall back on in sabrina and blaine fights, and solo'd lorelei and lance. he also cameo'd in my other gen1 and 2 nuzlockes since i never could get a pikachu or mareep early on. i haven't had another 'mon dominate so much, but i've seen some close seconds from a couple of starters and/or gift and trade 'mons from npcs.

I mean sure, there are some designs that, when compared to others, I would say are better or worse, but there's not a single one that I look at and think "Now there's a cool/cute/great Pokémon right there".

Nope. Honestly, I think have such a ridiculous amount is part of the problem. It's easy to pick your favourite fruit out of a selection of 4 or 5, but if you start throwing in the hundreds of other different varieties? How can you possibly weigh them all up?

Then I still don't have one. I change my teams completely every game, not a single Pokémon has been on any of my teams twice, and I never have an overbalance of one type.

The problem with that is it makes you pick from a group of Pokémon. But like I said, I can't pick in the first place. I guess I could technically get there if I set the group size to 2 and just picked one of the mons each time but that would take forever.

Don't listen to the betas in this thread OP. It's only natural you don't feel attachment to any particular pokemon. After all, they're only tools meant for battling. I only really "like" the strong and useful pokemon, and even then I feel indifferent about them.

Yeah, I may have liked some pokemon before, like say Bastiodon, but he was fucking useless and always let me down, so i stopped using him and eventually released him. If it's not good in battle, then what's the point? You're probably trying to use shitmons OP.

But it is the truth. Strong pokemon, weak pokemon, it takes true strength for a trainer to differentiate the two and win with what is best. Only losers try to win with their "favorites", because they're too emotionally attached to make a decision that requires such strength. And of course, the weak pokemon take the brunt of the trainer's weakness after it gets hurt fighting stronger and superior pokemon, what a joke.

The only thing I hate more than weak pokemon, are weak trainers.

In the games it's true there are strong and weak Pokemon because strength is dictated by incompetant creators who don't care for balance. But it doesn't really matter because Pokemon are just badly animated lines of code and winning is about rigidly following an established meta and hoping for RNG.

From an 'in-universe' perspective Pokemon can get hurt if you push them but the anime is pretty clear that Pokemon are all pretty equal (not counting Legendaries) and even weaker Pokemon can beat stronger ones with a good trainer, it comes down to good training since there's more dynamic battles than clicking an attack and hoping you don't miss.

So it's essentially meaningless.

What rubbish. If they're just lines of code then you shouldn't hold attachment to them in the first place. As for the anime rules, they just don't make sense. How can weak and small pokemon possibly ever beat big and strong pokemon? They can't, because there comes a point where the physical differences between two pokemon are greater than your belief in a completely nonsensical and fictitious idea that "all pokemon are equally strong". Caterpie, magikarp, burmy, can never defeat Salamance or Infernape.

One of the first things to happen in the anime was Pikachu beating it's evolved form, which should be objectively stronger.
We see Ash run into the league with NFEs over and over again and do reasonably well against things that would demolish him in an in-game setting.

They're two totally different mediums with two different sets of values as to what makes a good trainer, so mixing them up to make a point is dumb. In the anime it's about trust between pokemon and trainer, creative strategies and thinking on your feet. In game it's about rigidly following an existing meta and crunching numbers.
