Just giving the Pokemon some kind of personality (that isn't just a +-10% to a fucking stat) would be a start.
The partner plusle/minun in fucking Ranger has more character than anything you'll catch in a main series game.

Agreed. And egg moves should all be tutorable.
Any mechanic that encourages throwing away your old Pokémon in favor of a new, better bred Pokémon is against the spirit of the game.

Monster Rancher 2 did something really nice, while still keeping hidden numbers and stuff, but you actually feel a personality in your monsters, from what food they want, to having huge successes on trials, to even being able to spoil them, they feel a lot more like actual creatures
