That said, I don't care about the gender per se, but I do find it rather stupid.
Save the Gym Leaders, Oak, Bill, Rival, and Elite 4, basically no one had character except those random 4 guys who claimed to be brothers so changing it removes a small part of what people remembered originally.
Female grunts made sense but they changed established characters to do so. Minimally established, but still established.
