I know the technology was limited in the 90s, but why did they screw up so badly with the gen 1 games?

I'm assuming you mean with all the bugs and shit? Have you ever played any of the other game boy rpgs from the same time period? Most of them have horrendous bugs just like r/b. The SaGa games are an especially good example.

The short version is around 1989, they went from making fanzines to making babby's first program. They worked on a few other games during Gen 1's development to learn to code.

Almost everyone can do a playthrough and find either no bugs or extremely minor bugs. Therefore the code is good.

Werster himself as said it’s a bug, every time a Pokémon uses a status move on you all your other stats go up by 1.25 because of the badge boosts, that is a bug that they did not intend
