Because, believe it or not, 99% of people stopped caring about Pokemon around the Orange Islands and GSC. So Kanto pandering is the only thing that makes the vast majority of the world's population actually want to spend a neuron or two to see what the all fuzz is about, because that's all they know and all they ever cared about.

its obvious Ash is gonna win this time, but this doesnt feel earned like in XYZ, like, at all.

this clearly feels like an INCREDIBLY DESPERATE plea from the anime staff for forgiveness, forgiveness that they clearly dont deserve and never will because they brought it unto themselves with their stupid 'if ash wins the anime ends' rule.

Ash needed something to even the playing field as every single opponent of his was gonna use them, and A!Greninja fits the bill perfectly.
