I agree, I liked them too. I would have preferred if they were a little more connected though. I mostly wanted to simply see Jessie, James and Meowth introduce themselves to Ash for the first time in the second film, but I guess it just happened off screen?
I'm also a little confused by how Ash's inclusion in the second one was handled. He's just kind of there, it's never about him and we don't even know at what point of his adventure he is or what he's done since the last time. We don't even see his team. It was the perfect occasion for them to just let Ash bring out Charizard out of nowhere without it feeling forced, but instead we only see Pikachu.
I both films, I enjoyed the side characters, it would be nice to see them come back.
