there's one problem with this whole narrative: people keep buying their shit. merchandise will keep selling like crazy, swsh will sell 15+ million like always, etc. pokemon will continue to shamble along as a zombie franchise as long as the fanbase keeps rewarding their current direction with their money.

A series can't die unless there's a spiritual successor there to replace it.

The closest Pokemon itself ever got to replicating Pokemania was the Micromania GO Boom which lasted a good two-three months, which is an astonishingly long time compared to the standard one-two week lifespan of a fad.
And harnessing that Micromania was enough to immensely elevate Pokemon to #1 status and truly solidify it as an immortal franchise.

Fortnite's going strong and the only thing stopping Minecraft (which is currently experiencing a gigantic normalfag resurgence, for whatever reason) from being the best selling game ever made is something that has such a strong head start that it's from the USSR, and even then it's a thin margin

That wouldn't even be a bad thing. If you're a longtime fan of something, sometimes you just want to end on a high note.

I mean, look at older Star Wars fans. They had to suffer through the prequel trilogy, because it just would not die. Then they had to suffer again with the sequels & anthologies. They can't even go back to the original trilogy anymore because all you ever find these days are "remasters" that add random CGI crap. It's gotten to a point where they question their memories and have long-ass discussions on the internet asking whether one of C-3PO's legs was always a different color, or if it was edited in the remasters.

A. Ditto not being able to copy facial expressions was limited to a single ditto that was having difficulties and needed additional training, in a single episode over 900 episodes ago. All further depictions of this 'problem' have been non-canon, fandom, pandering, and other nonsense. When Ditto use transform, they look exactly like their target. Don't believe me? Load up any pokemon game, acquire a ditto, and then transform into the opposing pokemon. Unless the opposing pokemon is a ditto, your ditto will not retain a 'ditto face' after transformation.
