Dear /vp/.

Last time I played Pokemon when they were out on GBA. I decided to give latest game a go and got this one.

Any advice for somebody like me? What Pokemon to search for in first place? Any recommended starting team to focus on? What to avoid bothering with? Thanks in advance!

The story is kinda short but the world itself is pretty robust. There are some side quests that really make the world feel alive. Pokemon sumo and ultra sumo aren't my favorite but I still really like them. Take it slow, there isn't a lot of actual story.

Well, Im about to see, right? I only started just now and it feels much more child orientated. It's somewhat cute.

That’s a good way to put SM, cute in a kid-friendly way. I personally think it overstays its welcome by the end, but it’s your first play through so you should be fine.
Pichu is actually not a bad compliment to your Rowlet. When you evolve it into Alolan raichu you will get a good special attacker with high speed and electric/psychic coverage.
My only thought is to maybe look up something with trick room and high bulk or something with the ability sturdy and the move toxic and try to get one of those on your team. There will be a boss fight later that you will want to get cheeky with, and those are two strategies to help you out.
As for Black/White or Black2/White2 specifically, the former gives you the same feeling now that everyone else had playing it for the first time where you can only use new Pokemon until the postgame, which is cool. Black 2 and White 2 not only add to the first games in story but have many many side quests and post game adventures to keep interest going. Admittedly some are null with the official wifi server down, but you can still do a decent amount with fan servers.

Search for Pokemon you have never used before, that is the only way to remotely have fun during the regular playthrough, speaking from my own experience.

Try not to rush through the game and talk to the NPCs. Actually if you don’t mind tracking back to previous islands and towns once in a while, you will see new events and be able to catch more Pokemon, like Bewear and stuff. NPC dialogues also hint at rare Pokemon, like Maeranie, Sableye, etc.
Just take your time and enjoy the game, it’s not bad as vp says it is. USUM is actually pretty good.

You should spent time catching a lot of new Pokemon, obviously to get more used to them but also because you'll want to get in as much time playing between the cutscenes as possible - they're a bit relentless. If you have the Exp. Share turned all, your whole party gets Exp. points so you don't have to worry about keeping one static team of 6 the whole game and just have fun trying out as many as you want.

Whatever you do, don't keep patting your Pokemon. I know it is tempting, but the exp boost really makes you overlevel, and fast. Also there is no way to lower this, because it is not the same as friendship. You still capture salamence in the first island iirc, does not really break the game but a good mon to fall back to once you hit that bump in difficulty especially with intimidate (Y'all know what I am talking about)
Make sure your team is somewhat coherent and have good outs to a sweeper by the time you reach the main story climax, which you either know, or can tell anyways.

Use whatever is cool. Grubbin is a solid pick as it evolves to final stage on the start of the second island.
USUM is one of the harder Pokemon games (Not saying a lot, but whatever).

I checked info on this island scan. It appears kinda interesting except that it cost 10 codes scanned each time its being used and same codes cant be scanned twice.

Unless I missed something?
