They probably were trying to treat him like a traded Pokemon that Ash couldn't control after they leveled up too high. He was probably supposed to regain its trust after beating a gym leader. It just kinda backfired when the idea of having an ending was dropped requiring them to stretch out the episodes between gym battles.

Red's Bulbasaur didn't change personality when it evolved, same for Red's Charmander in Origins.

I agree with you but it doesn't make any sense for the complete change in opinion in Ash when Ash probably did the most for Charmander out of any of his Kanto Pokemon.
>Charmander was dropped because he was weak
>Ash takes him in despite this and makes him strong
>Charizard now doesn't give a fuck about Ash and throws the league match
It's just inconsistent and bad writing.

I feel like that personality fit more with Squirtle than Charmander. Squirtle was already an arrogant cocksure ass, him getting to the point of not listening to Ash would have been a natural progression of their relationship.

It's not that unlikely that the role was meant for Squirtle until an executive said, "Squirtle is too cute to evolve and Charizard is cooler than Blastoise," and the role went to Charizard.
