A lot of the problems pokemon's going through have been problems for a long time. Some are inherent design flaws the devs have never bothered to fix even from the very beginning. It's a complicated mess of breaking and maintaining traditions of the series back and forth between games which makes almost every single installment a mix of good and bad qualities with not a single game ever being perfect.

Personally I'm of the opinion that Pokémon has had two downward trends. Generation 4, when the stereotypical formula we've been stuck with was fully set in stone, bringing together all of the "franchise original sins" from the previous three generations. And Generation 6, when the devs finally reached a point of laziness that the majority of their fans took notice, and their reputation hasn't recovered since.

Gen 1: Not much to say, it was the first

Gen 2: Pretty much a perfect sequel, building on what came before. Certainly not flawless but pretty much everything people wanted from a second Pokemon game.

Gen 3: Moved to a totally different region rather than another sequel. Controversial at the time but it felt much more fresh and original than the 'Kanto 1.5' approach of Gen 2.

Gen 4: I'd say this is the 'peak', in terms of pure gameplay. With items, abilities and the Phys/Spec split the game felt complete.The focus on story, worldbuilding and characters was probably the start of the cutscene-heavy games that would come later, but at the time it felt like the scale had been ramped up in a good way.
However the shitty DP dex, and among other things fixed by Platinum was an early example of GF either being retarded, or worse, deliberately holding back on content to shill the third version more.

Gen 5: Most controversial Gen on /vp/ (and maybe outside of it too) but honestly can't say I ever understood why. Gens 4 and 5 always seemed nearly identical to me. 5 runs smoother, looks prettier (unless you dislike the animated sprites I guess) but didn't really add any major new mechanics to the gameplay. It just kept up the trend of a greater focus on story and characters.
But while it was a pretty good story, it was noticably intruding on gameplay now. You can't walk into a town without some NPC rambling at you for a few minutes, you're railroaded hard from place to place. The routes themselves were incredibly well designed and had plenty to explore, but the map layout was pretty dull.
I don't think it deserves half the hate it gets, I'd still consider it as the last of the good games rather than the first bad ones.

Not much else to say from there. They started adding new battle gimmicks in megas/z-moves/dynamax that were only used for marketing new Charizard forms than enhancing gameplay. Cutscenes got longer and more intrusive, maps got smaller and less detailed.

Until then it had been rare that things were removed at all and when they were, they were at least replaced by something else.

HG/SS didn't have Super/Contests (even though it really should've considering May went off to Johto for contests) but it had the Pokéathlon and Gen 3 didn't have the Day/Night cycle but Hoenn at least still had the clock to take advantage of the time based evolutions, for example.

Regardless of one's opinion Gen 1 > 4 was all uphill while Gen 4 > 8 is all downhill.

Also, realistically I was in my late 20's when X/Y released and despite it's MANY flaws it's personally my favorite. So even inserting my opinion, you're wrong.

This. The switch to 3d killed it, not because the problems 3d and that pokemon would only work with sprites - like some people believe, just they butchered the transition and didn't implement it right.

On top of that all the extra resources needed for 3d meant that other areas of the game suffered.

As for pokemon designs I actually think they've been getting better over time, Alolan designs are great. Just the games let them down big time.

I bitched about 3d looking ugly back when it came out and people told me I'd get used to it. I still haven't, it's fucking disgusting.
Everything looks so robotic and bland. And the maps got smaller to compensate.
People have talked about the models at length but I still don't understand how a moving 3d model can look less dynamic than a still sprite. I guess just because the poses are so boring.
I was playing Dragon Quest 9 the other day, which has full 3d combat where characters move about and attack with real animations, its far more interesting than the pokestaredown we have now and it came out a decade ago.

Other aspects have gone downhill to. But for me all the charm that was unique to Pokemon was lost in the transition from 2d to 3d.

Gen IV is my favorite but I do think that is where elements of the decline began to subtly show their faces. Overall, the DS era was the strongest era of Pokémon. XY had potential, but they were rushed and needed at least another year to properly pace the content they had. I don't think a third version could have fixed them because the base wasn't strong enough.

Platinum didn't "fix" DP, they were strong games to begin with.

Are trivial complaints and/or opinions. Platinum was better than DP in many ways, but DP was a base developed over 4 years and planned for at least 7. Yes, they would be overall more enjoyable experiences if the engine speed was closer to Gen V's and there was a greater balance of types during the main story, but these are far from game-breaking problems and it doesn't change the way the game is designed. It's not like you need a Fire-type on your team. At the most, you can only ever have 12 types on one team anyway, so you're always excluding 5+ (6+ in Gen VI) at any given time. What does it matter if one of those excluded types is Fire or one of your included Fire-types in the story is Infernape/Rapidash? You can catch pretty nearly every other Fire-type in the series post-game, with the exceptions of previous starters and Legendaries.

Any game with more than 4 HMs requires a minimum of 2 Pokémon in the party with access to them, and that's any game with HMs. But I think HMs are more interesting than Poké Ride because they REQUIRE a sacrifice to gain the rewards behind HM spots while Poké Ride doesn't. It's not interesting using Tauros Charge to break through a boulder to get a TM when you can do it at any time. The only "sacrifice" you're making is a 5 second diversion of attention from the main story, and that's sad for a series whose side content was plentiful.

B2W2 was the last good and first bad game. Go back and replay it, and look at all the handholding and retarded design decisions forced on you at the start. The game's great, but in its greatness, it snuck in lots of what people hated about XY onwards.

Although theoretically, gen II started the downward trend through a lot of random bad decisions, and then gen 3 being incompatible with it put the last nail in the coffin for a lot of people with Pokemon. I personally think gens 1-5 are all about equally great, but you can't deny that B2W2 was the perpetrator of a number of problems with the series. Gen 6 stripped content, which B2W2 had, which exposed the flaws in hiding.

Content-wise, XY. Kalos is an okay region, but the region feels like a downgrade from what came before. Plus the postgame features paled in comparison to BW2.

Gameplay-wise, Sun & Moon, and then really Sword & Shield. With the new Fairy type, Mega Evolutions, PPS, and DexNav, Gen 6 was the best gen from a gameplay perspective. Sun & Moon didn't make the PPS and Dex Nav standard features, got rid of Triple and Rotation battle formats, and failed to expand upon Mega Evolution. And then Sword and Shield did away with Megas and Z-Moves and the National Dex. I'm not going to harp on it, but I think the latter will seriously reduce the replayability of the games for competitive and long-time fans.

Simply put, I think the worldwide release is killing the franchise. Coordinating development with translation into several different languages is probably much more of a mess than it logically should be. Gamefreak is notorious at this point for making shit more complicated than it needs to be. I can't help but think of how messy it was for Bandai Namco when they did the same thing for Tales of Vesperia way back. Wouldn't surprise me at all if it were the same for Gamefreak and Pokemon.

You can enourage exploration without forcing the player to gimp his/her party to get things. There's like only 2 good HMs, and enemy trainers never have to worry about this, not even the Champion. Just make HMs a passive ability that you unlock with badge count and the problem is solved.

Getting the Secret Techniques didn't feel like you were going on tour with Pokémon that you didn't own (which contributed to the feeling that you were just a tourist in SM, not really exploring anything that's never been seen before) but it still didn't force you to gimp your lineup with HM Moves.

I think based on prerelease materials SWSH will give your upgrades through the Rotom Phone, but we'll see how that goes.

I did view my HM slaves as integral parts of my party because they got me to every hidden nook and cranny in whatever region I was in. I was always selecting them for something. Just because I didn't really use them in battle doesn't mean they were any less important than the rest of my party. I think that the HM system can be reworked, but it would have to be on an HM by HM basis. For example, I don't see any harm in making Fly available anytime. Many games have a fast travel system that doesn't ask for a sacrifice beyond finding those fast travel points first. I think that more HM abilities could be streamlined like Strength where once you use them in the area, you shouldn't need to keep mashing through text boxes to use them subsequent times. Just let me slide up and down cliff walls in the area instead of asking me every time. Or you could try the idea of making HM obstacles disappear permanently, but I think that would devalue the HM pretty quickly. But if you made the act of removal meaningful (ie. increasingly complex minigames where there were easier solutions for temporary removal and harder solutions for permanent), HMs would be seen as more valuable. Or if HM obstacles served many purposes, like merging cut trees, headbutt trees, Apricorn/berry trees, and honey trees into one super tree.

Gen 6 is when the pokemon games became lazy advertisements rather than soulful games. Shame, because you can see a lot of creativity and passion behind the image if 6, but it goes unused and ultimately pushed aside for appeal and pandering. You can feel the game director's unfaithful influence on the game. It's like an author taking his creative, expressive, and hopeful work to his editor only for him, the director, to go, "nonono this won't sell, we need this and that because kids won't like this". Rather than making games from the heart, they have become jaded (After failing to recapture gen 1s success) and make games for the dollar.

For as much as people like to hate on Gen V you can tell it had A LOT of effort put into it. So much so Black and White had a whole sequel with tons of content, and different content at that too.
Compare that to X/Y and you find X/Y is very light on anything post-game. Sun and Moon had an Ultra version and even then its lacking in content.

I think the system should be like this:
There are obstacles in the game but you can bypass them by renting specially trained Pokemon (that you can also use in battle) to deal with them but they take up a party member slot.
You earn passes and each area has a different selection of rental Pokemon to choose from.
More expensive ones need more passes but are stronger and unlock new areas of that specific region/dungeon.
But if you want to pass through quickly you can just buy the basic ones and save your passes for the post-game.

In gen 6's defense, it was supposed to be "the reboot game", with intentions to bring a lot of players back to the series and make pokemon mainstream again. It wasn't necessarily supposed to be its own thing like the other games, and it did do what it was supposed to do.

Gen 7 on the other hand....well it was supposed to be innovative, and it was, but it's just a glorified advertisement. It's like they shimmied the gameplay under a rug hoping we would forget about it after 6's era.

From a gameplay perspective, Gen 6. The region was barely fleshed out, a lot of content (much more than in previous generations) went unused due to bad planning, models were and still are less expressive than sprites if not done properly (which GF won't do anytime soon).

As for the creatures and the world itself, it all started going downhill when they brought in western designers for Pokemon, the characters started looking and dressing less like ordinary humans (see Volkner vs Elesa), cross-generational evolutions were removed and the localisation team began including non-English sounding and artificially exotic city names (just so we're clear, the problem is that they sound artificial, not that their etymology is not English), so basically Gen 5 (with the notable exception of Driftveil, which corresponds to pre-Gen 5 standards). Honourable mention: the trend of including too many legendaries, which began in Gen 4 with the unnecessary inclusion of Heatran.

The first games to remove features instead of building on the last iteration. The first generation to start saving features for the third version, like a proper postgame and move tutors. The generation with the definitive art style change that made more pokemon look like toys instead of functioning proportioned creatures, and the start of pikaclones. Simple as that.

Eh, don't remember any big difference in difficulty between Barry and Cheren, they're both pretty forgettable.

Was Sinnoh really not non-linear? I remember it effectively being a straight path to most places.

While not the same it did introduce other post game content; like PWT or the Black City/White Forest stuff, so it's more a replacement.
