Why does it agree to live in a small sphere and be subservient in petty battles on behalf of some human barking orders? What gain does a god get from such an arrangement?

My autistic tendencies make me refuse to catch legendaries. I always just KO them because I find it ridiculous that these deities who control forces of nature would just succumb to the will of a child because he bought some expensive Poké balls.

First, same thing as Palkia, your ball is really only a suggestion.
There's literally nothing stopping it from pissing off whenever it wants, or even doing so and returning only when you call it out.

Arceus probably doesn't have much better to do, and is enjoying the time observing all it has created from the perspective of one of its creations.
Also, don't forget that no matter what YOUR headcannon for how you treat your pokemon is, the established character of all of the protagonists is that they build a very strong, positive bond with their pokemon, to the point that "orders" is a very strong word for how they battle.

Making a literal Pokégod was a mistake and D/P/Pt started the series down the slippery slope that has resulted in today's garbage stories in Pokémon games.
Even the Hoenn trio were pushing it, but at least global weather control is a bit limited compared to the scope of, I don't know, time and fucking space.

DPPt literally states in-game that
1) A Legendary's power can't be contained in a Pokeball - hence why Cyrus needs the Red Chain and literally throws his Master Ball away
and 2) Legendaries allow you to catch them if you prove yourself worthy

It's not like you have THE Arceus bound to your will. It's just a fragment of it's power that it lends you because you impressed it.

because it isn't necessarily a god in the judeo-christian sense. It's a creator deity, that created the world. That means it has the power to create the world. That doesn't mean it is otherwise exceptionally powerful. In a lot of cultures, godhood is more a race/species thing, and while individual gods will have powers over something (including power over other gods), they are still susceptible to being stabbed in the face. God having to be a monolithing unbelievably powered times infinity katana-wielding super space person who can kill you forever by thinking is a purely monotheistic thing, and given the existence of dialga and palkia, the pokemon universe doesn't follow such traditions.

There should really be a distinction made between what Pokemon are merely mythical, such as the Kanto birds, Lugia, Eon duo, Lucario, Darkrai, Deoxys, etc., and what Pokemon are legendary in that they are totally one of a kind, like Groudon, Kyogre, Giratina, and the like.

I think that the first group, mythicals, should be able to be caught.

The second group definitely should've had some more interesting mechanics involved. I think they'd have made for excellent boss encounters if they had expanded movesets or something that they used.

For example, the forest god in Princess Mononoke is depicted more as a wild animal than a sapient entity, and Lady Eboshi is plenty capable of killing it with a normal gun, altho with terrible consequences. If Arceus is like that, it might have created things unconsciously as a natural process, it might not even be fully conscious of the power it wields.
