I really like Silver, mostly because I never took him seriously even as a kid playing G/S. He was so edgy and moody that it came off as a bit of a joke to me, so I thought it was tongue-in-cheek.

I like what they did with him and his storyline in HGSS.

I agree with this. It is kind of amazing just how thoroughly Silver EXPLAINS his entire supposed character arc to you. Half his dialogue could monologues and they would have worked just as well.

Who cares? It's a game. You can make a team that's both fitting for the character and fun to play against as evidenced by Blue and Barry. Gamefreak was lazy and made the Silver an angsty pushover in both GSC and HGSS.

That team is actually probably my favorite thing about Silver. It’s subtle storytelling about his character. Even right before the Johto league his Golbat hasn’t evolved because it’s unhappy and he has no friends to trade with for Alakazam and Gengar.

Replay value, dude. Characterization be damned, if an opponent team is easy to defeat then there's not lasting effect beyond "oh yeah, I battled that guy."
The only good thing about SIlver is that he still has the best rival theme in the franchise.
