A model (such as a clay model in real life) is colorless.
It is the base, that a coat of paint is applied to.
In the case of 3D Modelling, this paint is the texture.
A sprite is a combination of pixels to make a shape.
This makes a sprite closer to a model (in this context) because it is the base shape.
To change a sprites 'texture' would simply be to change its colors.
The perfect example of why you're retarded actually exists within this game series: You don't consider Shiny Dragonite an entirely different Pokemon to regular Dragonite, because the only difference is the COLOR/PAINT JOB.
Similarly, all Game Freak have done is swap out the paint on existing models.
This is why so many people are trying to make the car analogy to you.
