What happened? Why did normies stop playing these? I admit, they're vastly inferior to both previous gens but what caused the backlash? Was it because many kids back then became teens and suddenly disregard Pokemon as gay kiddie shit?

Gold and silver absolutley blew me away when I was a kid, but Crystal felt like a disappointment. It was essentially the same game. Yellow had the anime thing going for it, but at that time I didnt expect the third version pattern that was to become standard.

Most kids just grew out of it, it's that simple. Only a fraction went on to keep playing because they liked the series way more than the average kid.

Yes but it failed to continue the momentum that gen 1 had. The games themselves felt like a retread of gen 1. With so few new mons, a lot of people just continued associating with gen 1 rather then having a continued interest in the franchise. Even the anime is guilty of this to a degree. They thought keeping Ash around would preserve people's interest, but in actuality a ton of people just stopped caring because of how stale it became.

The only thing that killed pokemania was time. At its inception, pokemon was something that felt completely unique and exciting. There werent any other games like it. And then the years pass and kids are used to it. Nothing stays exciting forever. By the time gold and silver were out, most of my classmates had already moved on to something else. But those who really were crazy about the series loved the games. It was a fad for the average kid.

Gen 2 felt like the end of it. The games and the anime both had definitive conclusions, the TCG was still intelligible to the average kid, the merch was still relatively cheap and ubiquitous. It both felt like it was done and that it could go on forever at the same time, so many people just stopped paying attention.

I think this was the driving force behind it. The anime stagnating as a result of dropping the GS Ball plot caused a lot of people to stop watching the show, and when they lost interest in the show they stopped having something regular to keep them invested in Pokémon and lost interest, moving on to other things. It certainly wasn't the only factor involved, but ut really didn't help.

As much as I dislike RS I kind of agree with you there. All my friends had every mainline pokemon between us, I had Emerald and a Gameshark that my brother got for his Gamecube when he got Colosseum. Completing the pokedex was a chore but there was such a payoff. My best memories were probably getting Ho-Oh in Colosseum Battle Mode after having my ass whooped a million times as well as the time my brother managed to use his action replay to get that secret scene which blew my mind. Pokemon wasn't as popular as it used to be so it felt like me and my friends were on our own personal adventure trying to complete it. With the internet being as big as it is and the change the fanbase has gone through I don't think things will ever really be like that again

The japanese version came with a bonus disc like the NTSC one but instead of Jirachi, it had Celebi. The scene was still coded into the original disc and it would give you a Level 10 Celebi from AGATE. My bro had a copy of Ruby so he could transfer it into the game. Whole video explaining the process is here btw (Apparently works on the EU version but the text is mangled)
