"Bug" as a type is a very japanese thing. If pokemon was a western invention, there would probably be a "nature" type that would have grass, bug and some normal types as part of it.

Pokemon types are more analogous to D&D creature types and subtypes than the standard "4 classic elements plus lightning, ice, light, darkness, and maybe poison" wheel you see in JRPGs. This especially goes for Bug (Vermin), Fairy (Fey), and Dragon.

Bug is one of the more "elemental-esque" types in that there's so much going for it. It's so wholesome, full, and well-rounded, unlike, say, Fairy, which is kinda vague and divisive. When you see or hear Bug, you know what it is and all it encompasses in the Pokemon universe.
