Do you prefer the Gen 1-5 design philosophy where the objective was to fill the dex with as many Pokémon as possible or gen 6-8 where each Pokémon has a gimmick and lore

I prefer gen 7 dex, since they actually wrote new entries instead of copying them from the first 3 gens.

I didn't even know about the 'new philosophy' until another thread yesterday and I've been thinking of how much I hate how there's always these new Pokémon they have to throw a gimmick ability on and then they'll be focused on in trailers and then there's also not many new Pokémon and only a few of them I end up enjoying.

Gen 6 didn't do it very well, gen 7 had the best philosophy, and gen 8 unfortunately seems to be a toned down version of gen 7.

Former. Gimmicks can be good or bad meaning the Pokémon may be shit competitively factually even with it's gimmick and lore is opinion meaning it doesn't actually matter no matter how much care is put into it. The more there are the more you may like personally though.

Also, it's a game about collecting primarily. The more there is to collect the better whether you personally like each one or not.

I prefer my Pokemon to be like animal species or rare uniquely behaving monsters. 6-7 has a lot more "characters" and it's incredibly grating.
It's pretty hard to believe that every single Incineroar acts like the same kind of wrestling performer as the rest.
Pokemon's personalities should be up to the player to set and imagine up, not the pokedex and the lore.
