If you're talking about the 3DS, you just have to change the card to FAT32.

I've got 128 in my main and 64s in the rest.

what? i have heard people using 128 GB SDs on the 3DS, you just need to format it in FAT32

he will need it to hack the 3DS ez mode anyways, i would strongly suggest he gets one with ntrboot, so hacking the 3DS is a breeze and you get an NDS card as a bonus

Don't need the regular Sun/Moon since US/UM is just a updated version of the two. And I recommend getting a 32gb sd card for your system.

Platinum, HGSS and BW2 are the golden age trio and the obvious answer.
If you want just one then BW2 for content sake and HGSS for the classic Pokemon feel and nostalgia. Platinum sits somewhere in the middle.
