World design is mediocre. It's not a step up from gen3 and a lot of it leaves wanting, especially compared to gen5. Still has soul, though.
The slowdowns and the pace of the game are horrendous, worse than anything before or after.
The plot is utter shit. Gen3 had a very stupid plot, but it was something new. This was like a worse rehash of gen3.
In the end it's not as interesting as either gen3 or gen5, even if gen5 introduced new cancers. I can't say gen4 was anything but adequate if you love pokemon. Alas, I'm sick of all the rehashes so it doesn't scratch the itch for me anymore.
