No, Ivan, he's popular for the sole reason that in the first game he's the only Pokémon looking like a fire breathing dragon cucking Dragonite of what would have been its role if they didn't give him that retarded design. And they new it because they made Charizard a starter so anyone could have one. That's literally it, anything else is crap built upon it's neverending fame built on how stupid we were as kids. If anything I'm glad he got two megas because now at least it's viable, before XY only literal retards and kids used him.
The worst thing is that we'll never get another good reptilian fire dragon because it could take the spotlight from Charizard.

There's an inherent problem to "ONLY NEW" and that's that every game needs Pidgey and Caterpie and Rattata, and there was definitely a point to stop making new Pidgeys and Caterpies and Rattatas and it was a VERY LONG FUCKING TIME AGO.

Also, it's popular because Shitfreak and TPChit never marketed any other starter until Greninja (which Ironically easily cucked Charizard in popularity) and then TPC realized Greninja was a mistake and ruined the anime by making him both humiliated + released by Ash.

Charizard is overrated because no other Pokemon got the same treatment as it.
Its popularity wasn't earned but forced.
