Pretty much this. I was still in my blind fanboy phase when X and Y came out, but after taking a step back I realized how bad it was. USUM was the first time I regret buying a Pokemon game and I haven't bought one since. I skipped LGPE and I'm definitely skipping SS. It's not even out and I still feel ripped off.

Pretty much the same, although I honestly liked a lot of XY. It was lacking, but I was willing to cut them a break with it being the first 3D game. I put a lot of hours into battling and training, I liked a lot of the changes they made, even if it wasn't as good as BW/BW2. I foolishly hoped that future generations would build on it.

Sun/Moon was the first game I truly suffered through. My "no hope" moment was definitely the entirety of SwSh's marketing and the Dexodus.

xy was garbage in general, but the moment where you're given a KANTOOOO starter stands out because it showed that the backlash to gen 5 broke game freak's ambitions for the series. with both that and the viridian forest rehash, among other things, the message had clearly been sent that lazy nostalgia pandering would be rewarded over effort and content. it was also a huge middle finger to the real fans who had kept supporting pokemon when it wasn't cool anymore.

Honestly, I don't think I truly lost hope in a comeback until I started seeing announcements for Gen 8, culminating in Dexit and the BS excuses given for it. LGPE sucked, but I was willing to please understand their explanation that it was for casual fans while Gen 8 proper would be a return to form.

Then again, it does seem like Gen 8 was also the straw that broke the camel's back for a lot of fans, so if that winds up being reflected in SwSh's sales, it may be the kick in the ass that GF needs.

It captures the core elements of what got tens of millions of people into Pokémon. Kanto is a little plain, but it never got to the point that I didn't want to keep playing. I liked having a bunch of options for progression and I calculated my progress through the Pokédex. I always knew what was left and where to find it. Gen I may be broken as hell but you can still feel the passion and creativity behind it.

XY. I thought about revisiting in Citra because there's still no multiple save files , and man does it fail to have an identity of its own. Megas, PSS, and arguably Greninja are the only good things people remember from XY

ended up just replaying Crystal over and over. I did enjoy DPP a lot when I was younger but the hype died down again with BW (I recognize they're very good games but just wasn't too fun for me at least until B2W2)

I can keep going on, and while Gen III wasn't my jam, I think that they did it dirty. I always supported the idea of bringing Hoenn back IF they fixed it, but they didn't. They rushed it out to capitalize on nostalgia, and Masuda has said as much. FRLG and HGSS had a purpose for existing with their original versions not being compatible with later games. Masuda even said that Gen III remakes weren't initially planned unlike them, but were made due to fan demand, and that they had 1 year of preproduction and 1 year of development time, while HGSS began preproduction following DP along with Platinum. If quality was more important than sales, they would have given them the time they needed and made the definitive Hoenn games, but they needed them out a year after XY so they could have another year dedicated to SM.

As someone who was 9 when RB came out in North America in 1998, here are my feelings about each game at the time of release.

Gen 1: good
Gen 2: better
Gen 3: stupid, causing me to lose interest
Gen 4-8: ?

However, I revisited some games that I missed after deciding to give the games a chance again in my early 20s. These were Platinum, Black/Black 2, X, and even Moon.

I find it interesting that even though I was only 11 when Ruby and Sapphire came out, I already thought the new designs were dumb and that the direction that they decided to go in was tired.

Since GSC, at the time, seemed like a full on sequel which expanded a phenomenon which was developing and ongoing, what it added made the new games better.

Starting from Gen 3, mostly stagnation or steps backwards.

Gen 4 seems to have had many great additions and it has a feel very similar to Gen 2.

After that, I don't care. Whether good or not, they aren't what I like, they aren't made by the people who really had the same ideas as the original creators, and the quality has significantly dipped. However, this is not ultimately why I don't play any of these games anymore. I don't play these anymore because I am 30 years old and too old to be even thinking about this stuff.

Something interesting, the last time I replayed Pokemon Red was maybe 10 or so years ago. But, I played it in isolation - there was no more new Pokemon phenomenon, no more mystery, no more other kids also playing, no more discovery, no more trading, no more anything. Just me and this game. Without a lot of the hype surrounding it, the game felt very dead and featureless somehow. Like there was just nothing to it.

This same feeling is what the newer games gave me, when I played. This is reflected in things like Pokedex entries - what used to be neat tidbits of information eventually just became rephrased summaries of earlier ones or outright copy/paste jobs. No more mystery. Just rehashing.

I can't justify giving my time or money to the franchise anymore when there are so many other games that deserve my attention. On the Switch alone, I'm working on Octopath Traveler, still getting stuff out of Smash Ultimate, got hundreds of hours from Xenoblade 2, just bought Astral Chain, am looking forward to DAEMON X MACHINA soon, as well as Dragon Quest XI S. I work and don't have all the time in the world, and I'm the kind of person who tries to get as much as possible out of every game I play. Mainline Pokémon no longer exists in that bubble and that sucks because I used to give it so much priority. Masters, a mobile gacha game, is the most exciting thing about Pokémon to me right now, and that's disappointing to think about. I will not give a single cent to it and only play it because it's free. I'm sure I'll like the music in Sword and Shield and I don't particularly care one way or another about the aesthetic, but I don't need to buy the game for that. SMT V will be my next big Switch JRPG after DQXIS, and that's assuming no other big name JRPGs drop in the meantime.

But if Pokémon isn't going to try and earn its way into my wallet, it's never getting there again.

The funny thing about all this is that it took me this long to realize out of every monster collecting franchise, Pokemon was hands down the worse one all along.
Fucking Telefang was a better game than anything Pokemon made by 2000 and Digimon had already run circles around it before the turn of the century, twice.

If I had access to the other games back then I would say that Gen 3 was when it turned to no hope because it was still dragging behind other games; but since I hadn't, my point of no hope for pokemon is XY.
Volcanion having no quest in particular being a sign that Pokemon was a lost cause.

that's exactly why i come here. i don't post much, but occasionally, i see something nostalgic or discover something new about something old. for example, someone posted some guides for Gen 2 on how to win the bug catching contest which i thought was interesting. another time, i saw something here about the ilex forest shrine and celebi, which all of us north americans obviously missed out on.

but even if i still did like pokemon, truth be told, most of the content on this board is so awful that if anything it drives me away from this place. part of my returning is habit, and another part is nostalgia for the older stuff.

past a certain age though, nobody should be into pokemon or even video games anymore. it's very strange. when i was young, video games were made by adults, who had never grown up with them, for kids to keep them entertained.

now, kids who never grew up but became adults, make video games for people like themselves as well as for kids. it really shows in the quality and philosophy. it's very strange.

XY was their first foray into 3D so I give GF a pass there, plus it had some pretty damn comfy spots and music. Sun Moon were a step in the right direction but GF's need to jam in shitty gimmicks like Z moves and the festival plaza really ruined the experience for me, and I ended up dropping online battling and trading altogether.

I'll have to agree with most of the other posters though, the games really are at their core, Pokemon. They've got their flaws but the core experience is always enjoyable no matter what gamefreak chooses to cut (or add). The negativity has never really made sense to me, it mostly seems to be coming from people who have grown into adults but are unable to accept that they no longer relate to the franchise, yet choose to tag along because of nostalgia.

There are things to like about video games as an adult. Like how does one quantify "fun" to begin with? During the development of Super Mario 64, Shigeru Miyamoto spent hours just running around the castle grounds to try and get a grasp on what enjoyable movement would be. Super Mario Odyssey's movement is far more polished than 64's, and there are numerous factors at play in that game to make its movement work. Camera control and level design go hand in hand in 3D games. Developers work on understanding player psychology. For example, the purpose of coins in Super Mario Bros. wasn't just to give players an extra life, it was to control their movement. I love how there's so much depth to seemingly simplistic game mechanics and Super Mario Maker is an example of millions of people learning how to make levels based upon the depth of those mechanics.

Gabe Newell said that he believed games could be art after playing Super Mario 64, and I don't think he was talking about the music, story, or graphics. I think that games cannot just copy movies or books and be called art. They have to push their own unique medium of gameplay and accomplish what other mediums can't.

The example I use is Lapras in Union Cave being a far more memorable experience than getting a Lapras at Silph Co., finding wild Lapras in Sinnoh's second half of Victory Road, finding wild Lapras on Poni Island, or anything else. The Lapras in Union Cave is in an optional location that you have to backtrack to after obtaining Surf. And even then, it only appears on Fridays. It makes it feel like a special encounter and encourages going back to areas you may have skipped to find things you missed. It encourages exploration. And after you get Lapras, you can find the hidden exit in Union Cave which leads to the hidden parts of the Ruins of Alph where you can find wild Smeargle and Natu. You can find the other puzzles which lead to more Unown appearing which lets you complete the Unown subquest. The game would feel like so much less if it just HAD these Pokémon without anything to make them notable. Their mere existence does not a good game make. That's why I'm not as upset about Dexit as everyone else. Like they were going to do anything interesting with those Pokémon anyway. We're not even getting actual National Pokédexes anymore, the Pokémon are just Pokémon. They're as meaningful as hacking in Pokémon because all they do is exist in the files. The reason the culling bugs me is because it seems totally unnecessary after they supposedly future proofed their models, hence the poor battle performance on the 3DS. It just comes off as another shortcut. And once they get all Gen II-VII Pokémon updated to HD textures, why won't they be in every game? Wouldn't they be future proof then?

Perhaps, but that isn't a good reason to waste time on them. There are things to like about drugs and crime as adults too but that isn't a good reason to do them. As an adult, there should be other things you spend time on. Instead of leveling up your Pokemon, why not learn a new skill or level up yourself in some way? After you put dozens or hundreds of hours into a Pokemon game and finally get bored of it and put it down for the last time, the world around you will have moved on. You will have nothing to show for those hours other than a cartridge of data you will forget. It really says something when the most fun I have with Pokemon is the TCG, Pokemon Go, and Pokken. GameFreak needs its contract annulled by TPC and another studio should get the chance to work on a mainline game. I'm not looking for LE BREATH OF THE WILD POKEMON, but actually trying new things would be nice. Here's some ideas.

Im super super super into game mechanics and how people interact with them. Pokemon is one of the biggest IPs ever and it grew from a videogame series.

I also think this series has an insane amount of potential for truly quality games even without retarded shit like real time botw battles or whatever. Im almost more invested in seeing theorycrafting over what the games could be than I am in the actual games themselves. I consider the core mechanics to be really, really solid.

I think better integrating the world and the battles is key. Like say if a trainer spots you they challenge you to singles/doubles/triples/rotation/whatever. But if you talk to them from the sides or behind and challenge them, a menu pops up and you get to decide the battle type.

I think a Seventh Saga style radar system would also be a great way to handle random encounters. That game isnt great but the way the radar works with random encounters is wonderful.

I think this would help the overworld navigation feel more like part of the ‘game’ and not just sidefluff.

A hard mode for adults would also be really really nice even if we arent the target audience.

Just because we have one life to life does not mean we have one way to happiness.

Also, I'm one of the guys in this thread that dislikes what Pokémon has become. I don't just blindly eat it up and I'll move onto more deserving games. Playing and looking into games with meaning is what has meaning to me. People like me exist for movies, literature, music, and every other medium and can exist as professionals. The video game industry has existed for almost 50 years now with the film industry being over 50 years older. Who knows what it'll be like in another 50 years, but it's still maturing. It's here to stay. I'm not saying I'm gonna get a job out of it but it's fine having it as my passion.

Really sword/shield was their moment to really put out a great solid game,create a whole new generation of fans and remind people what was so great about Pokemon, yet they’ve failed miserably. No kid is going to grow up and be telling their children about the curry recipes they collected. Pokemon on its current trend is destined to become another sonic and fade into obscurity.
