Fairy is just the cute type it seems. It sort of makes sense for this type to exist since it corresponds to an egg group that existed from the start and went by the same name, but all aspects of "fairyness" are already covered by previous types. The mysterious and serene aspect is covered by psychic, le cute meme were mostly normal types and so on. I'd say only xerneas and the tapus have lore that can't be told in any other type.
