Pokémon seek out humans because for some reason trainers can bring out the inner potential of a Pokémon in battle through the bond they share or some other gay japanese bullshit about the power of friendship. This is why the moves Return and Frustration have their effects: the more a trainer is able to help their Pokémon thrive and improve and evolve, the stronger their bond and the more powerful Return is. The poorer the bond and more losses suffered will add to Frustration. Pokémon don't give a shit about being sent into battle, they just want to win and achieve higher tiers of power. They're sapient, intelligent creatures.
