It's better designed because it's objectively more balanced. I can't spam it everywhere in the game like I can with Megas and the limitations it has means you can't use it in battle as mindlessly.

As much as I'm leery or Dynamaxing, pretty much. The Max Moves are basically buffed z-moves that you get for three turns. People just don't want to admit it.

I never really liked megas or z-moves to begin with though, so it's not like I'd miss them (aside from some of the designs) if they never came back

Yeah, and I'd say it's a pretty fair tradeoff.
While Megas have a permanent change with specifically buffed stats, possibly no moves and no held items possible,
Gigas have a limited transformation with a flat stat buff, a new super move among other strong ones, and held item options.

The change is minimal. It's the definition of playing it too safe. Megas had flavor. This is just taking Drednaw and deforming him.

Better having a head spike lunge attack or the bubble neck is useless

Megas, and z-moves were never broken to begin with, and the really overpowered ones at least for megas, were because of the retarded overpowered abilities for the most part.

That creates a problem in that it's now only gonna be already good mons that benefit massively from it.
Megas were better balanced since it was restricted to specific mons which would often give them a purpose to be used over the others. Yes some megas were blatantly overpowered, but that was more due to their retarded abilities or in the case of mega fug.
