Being the last 2d oriented/top down overworld is the biggest advantage to Gen 4’s style. BW never looked good to me because it tried to force 2.5D too much with the camera angles, and it just looked chinky.
The move to 3D was the real killer of the franchise, it’s just not something Game Freak is capable of.

Agreed. HG/SS is the apex and end of the series for me.

Everything after just doesn't have the feeling of soul or magical touch that Pokemon is known for.

People complain that it's too grindy, not that it's too difficult.

It's difficult to reliably find any Pokémon that are above level 50 in the games, and it makes leveling up to 100 a real slog.
