One of the main reason people want an open world pokemon is because one of the main appeals of it is going out and exploring a world you dont know and going on your own adventure to become the best. The problem is this is the appeal when you're a kid and it works when you're a kid because you dont realize how railroaded these games tend to actually be but once you get older that illusion doesn't work. The wonder of the exploration and travel shatters and you realize you're going in a straight line. People want an actual open ended pokemon game because that's why people like this series, at least its one of the reasons and a non linear game would capture the feeling again. It's the same way with zelda itself with a lot of it's 3d games. They're not as open ended as people remember but people liked how open ended they felt as kids. Thats probably one of the reasons they looked back at the original, to actually play into that open ended appeal people liked about that series. An open ended pokemon game would be great since one of the main thigns about the series is how you play it, pokemon's party system is already more tailor made and customizable than almost any other JRPG, why not lean into that user choice with the other mechanics like exploration.
