He only became a researcher because Blue was originally gonna be one of Oak's aides in the 1997 Gold beta. In that draft, he lost to Red so hard (bear in mind Oak came to the league to congratulate him, not Red) that it completely and utterly humiliated him, eventually prompting him to start helping out his gramps at the lab. He speaks a lot more politely too, compared to Gen 1.

Also Gary's "harem" only hung around because his great-uncle, then the mayor, was bankrolling them. They were previously hired for his election campaign.
In the anime, the Oak family's only real claim to fame stems from Professor Oak's grandpa, Pallet Oak, being the only trainer in a 100 years from that town to ever make it to the Pokémon League, and practically ranking dead last. The then village was renamed after him for his otherwise mediocre achievement.

Pallet Town in the anime was notorious for having subpar trainers, with very few ever ranking within the Elite 10000. Ash and Gary have been the only exceptions in recent history.

Still pretty based if you ask me. It's also nice seeing older Red and Blue getting along in Gen 7. Red losing to Gold probably humbles him as well. There will always be someone better coming along.

The OG anime's got a ton of lore that went unused, e.g. trainers generally became deadbeats in their 20s+ if they failed to rank in the Elite 10000 and didn't find another line of work. Ash's dad and maternal grandpa were stated to be two such deadbeats.
His house also happens to be the only restaurant in town, the Pallet House Inn.

Um... bullshit. Professor Oak himself, hes one of the most famous and respected pokemon researchers in the pokemon world and not just in the anime, and he didn't get that way by riding on the coat-tails of an ancestor. He earned it and in the same fashion Gary is now doing the same thing, his ability as researcher was earned not given to him by his Great-Uncle.... though the money certainly did help.

Among other things, he didn't even invent the Pokédex in this continuity, and its purpose is rendered somewhat moot when it already has most entries preprogrammed in, and doesn't seem capable of analyzing unknown Pokémon.

He played an important part and I actually liked that change though I didn't like that the two of the co-inventor was a literal incompetents one of which couldn't identify his own fucking photograph, the other was literally insane

But did the give either Oak or Gary their skill or ability? No? Then it doesn't matter, that's like saying Einstein's accomplishments are irrelevant because they came on the coattails of Newtons. It doesn't work that way.
