Like in Ash's battle against Flannery where his Corphish had fallen asleep, had to take hits, but eventually woke up and won the gym battle for him. Or how Tobias' Darkrai put several Pokemon including Ash's to sleep, but they weren't immediately considered knocked out until they were attacked and fainted, and Ash's Sceptile was put to sleep but woke up and beat. Nando put Ash's Heracross to sleep in their league battle, but Heracross won by using Sleep Talk. Even going beyond Ash's battle, Dawn had a contest battle where her Ambipom fell asleep due to Sing, but eventually woke up and won.
Anytime where a Pokemon does lose due to sleep, they still need to have been attacked, like Ash's Fletchling falling to Viola's Vivillon's Sleep Powder which was followed up with a Solar Beam while it was vulnerable.
