The referees for Ash vs. Richie were utter garbage and ruined everything, but the idea of the league was strong and clear. The whole story of the series built up to it as well; it's the main goal, or at least the first massive milestone. In contrast, the latest league was a watered-down version of what it is in the games and is extremely bare bones. There are no qualifications to enter and there's no real sense that things are just as major or respectable as in the other regions. In fact, the absence of anything beyond 3 vs. 3 looks really bad when you consider that 6 vs. 6 becomes the main battle style of the Top Eight onward in the other leagues.
