We called this years ago, if they made Ash lose in Kalos they'd make him win in the next region to "make up" for the loss and the backlash, but at that point the damage had already been done. After Tobias and after Alain there was no point in getting invested in Ash winning because the writers would always fuck him over despite a huge portion of the show's runtime being dedicated to Ash training to win.
I really love SM from an animation and writing standpoint, it's very fun and refreshing compared to robo-Ash from XY but I still don't feel like this is the big W we've all been waiting for because SM was so much more laid back as a whole compared to constantly rigid shonen Ash.
tl;dr too little too late, the only people celebrating this are either devout anime fans or normalfags who never really gave a shit but wanted to join in on the latest trend like they always fucking do.
