It only lasts 3 turns and wears off after switching so you can't just mindlessly click the power up button without thinking.
It works on any Pokemon at any point in the battle, and it isn't item based, so you can adapt and use it to react to anything that happens in the battle instead of just being another arbitrary team building stone you slap on one of your pokemon.
It's better from a game design standpoint in every objective way; you're just upset that your shitty designs are gone. Megas added literally nothing to the game except more power creep.
