(although SM got rid of that aspect, thus ruining the adventure experience, which is why I hate Sun Moon, even the obligatory "movies" where this travel aspect was highlighted, avoided the Alola region as a setting).the pokemon world, while based on the real one, always feels as it's own distinct thing, but you have watch early into your life to really get it, and I'm not talking about nostalgia. the world always feels vast and real since the humans don't actually have supernatural abilities, and in the somewhat rare cases where they do, it's not their defining trait. Sure the plots may be repetetive shit, but the potential for awesome stories that sometimes is used properly is there, and the story's narrative is surprisingly easy to immerse yourself into. Which means a lot of people get lured in by the magic feeling the anime invokes. If you've never experienced it as a child, I'm afraid you'll never understand what makes Pokemon special compared to something like, say , Family guy. If anything, people laughing at you for watching Pokemon makes you feel sorry for them that they won't experience the beauty of the Pokemon World. Also Ash, despite inconsistently having personality shifts between seasons, always strives to get to the top and push on - as soon as the writers took that away from him in Alola and changed his design, his character stopped being Ash
