I've never seen a community so adamant about playing a game on easy mode and refusing to take responsibility for their own fun
I understand that people want a harder "baseline" experience for pokemon, but the options exist to make the game longer/more difficult at your leisure

At the end of the day, games are toys, and toys are known for allowing you to have your own fun. On that note, games that allow you to customise your experience are even praised for facilitating this "freedom".

Yet somehow we still have people that complain about "shit! this RPG is too easy!" while going out of their way to stock on a nigh infinite number of support potions and what not.

pokemon is only "easy" once you've memorized type matchups, general stat arrays, moves and abilities, etc.
This takes a while to fully understand and learn, which is the challenge of the game, but once you've got it all straight, what is the game supposed to do in return? Not let you use supereffective moves?
From there, it's up to you to figure out how to bring back some adversity in your travels

The thing is that these options do not make the game harder. They just make the game more tedious. Handicapping yourself so you have to mindlessly grind more doesn’t change trainer move sets, held items, EV spread, AI, etc.
At the end of the day all of the trainers are retarded and the gym leaders have 3 or 4 shitmons that don’t pose any threat unless you’re under leveled.
People want challenging battles, at least from the main people like leaders, elite 4, rivals, champs. Achieving this is on game freaks end. It’s not on us turning off exp share so we have to spend hours getting our mons equal level.

the game IS harder when you are lower level, don't use items in-battle, and don't have the ability to pick up every strong pokemon you come across
all of the games with the exp share are perfectly well-paced without it on, 10-20 minutes of grinding before a boss is a perfectly reasonable expectation for an rpg

shift mode gives you a "free turn", there is a reason you cannot do it when you fight other people, its set there literally to make the game easyer, AND the option to remove it is there because the devs know its unfair, so they give a chance to the players to set it up back to set mode.

You don't need to grind for literally any mainline pokemon, fuck you don't even need to grind for difficulty hacks, with renegade platinum I never grinded (and did not use items), fought every trained repelled all the time. Though I did wipe twice.

Casual player here. Playing on set, no items 90% of the time (sometimes berries), but with exp share because grind does not equal difficulty. And yes, pokemon games are easy even when you use the same number of pokemon as npcs and don't overlevel. Otherwise they are beyond easy.

Well good luck with that. Simple additional options in the settings like limiting number of your pokemon to your opponents and lowering their levels to the opponents or lower would be enough. But guess what? We won't get any, no matter how easy it is to implement.

The other thing that kind of irritates me is how many trainers with only one pokemon there is in the games. It's like, the most boring thing. Funny to read the complaints about Alola league 1 on 1 format in the anime after that.

Stop exaggerating. There are things that people choose to do that make the games way harder, and they're viable ways to give yourself extra handicaps if you want them. This isn't just a Pokemon thing either, people have been trying to beat games without doing intended mechanics forever, it's called skips in speedrunning, beating a game without doing x, and many more challenges. I don't even think that the games are objectively poorly balanced, it's just that everyone here has probably played through every mainline game twice and knows every mechanic in and out. Play the games how you want, but you have no grounds to bitch about how easy they are if you always get at least one pseudo on your team, evolve your Pokemon as soon as possible, or use EXP Shares even if it's your 3rd, 4th, nth playthrough and know what you're getting into. Totems were so hard for a lot of people because those people didn't always know what they were getting into.

The issue with difficulty is that it's either easy, not too hard, or too specific and obnoxiously difficult. I played a few hacks and mmo where I feel like I'm facing artificial difficulty when the opponent has access to stuff I don't have. When I beat them I don't think "that was a challenge" but instead I just wonder "why does the third gym leader have late game moves"?
What most people want isn't really hard, but a game with competent difficulty. AI that actually react and respond to your team, like switching out to an effective type, and major trainers with 6 Pokemon teams.

Shift, items, and Exp. Share are features available in the game. If they make the game easier, then the game is therefore easy. It's a valid statement. Even without all three of those things, the games are still easy. Trainers are largely underlevelled, have shit movesets, and dumb AI.
