Ash's final league winning team is only 5 pokemon, including unevolved pokemon and no returning pokemon. He didn't even bother to build a team. Hes just using whatever old shit he picked up in the region

the only one that felt underwhelming was torracat which never really ammounted to much, but that might change vs kukui because it has a rivarly towards incineroar

as a comparison, his BW team was also composed of unevolved pokemon, but they where all jobbers except for krookodile.

Ash's Pokemon had rivalry with one of Ash's rival's Pokemon from the same line. Rowlet and Hau's Decidueye, Torracat and Masked Royal's Incineroar, and Lycanroc with Gladion's Lycanroc.

Rowlet got its battle earlier in the tournament, Pikachu also already got its moment of glory being the one to defeat Guzma, Torracat is going to likely have its moment to shine in the exhibition match, so it was either Lycanroc or Melmetal, and Lycanroc's the one with the rivalry against Ash's finals opponent.
