Even the fun over-the-top expressions are re-hashes, they are just preferred to the lifeless dull look that lot's of cheaper mid to late 2000s anime had. XY is a hold over of that style where everyone is so detailed and on-model it becomes visually boring. Technically there is nothing wrong with XY's approach and it's a matter of taste, but if you are a fan of animation for the sake of animation or prefer "cartoony" shows SM is leaps and bounds better in ever aspect with regards to visual presentation.
