Problem mainly comes from the textures. Fur has very little depth and the crest pieces and bands aren't metallic enough. Also his mane doesn't look smoky enough.

No, it's the posture and the flatter face that makes it look worse. Old Entei looks proud and imposing, the new one looks like some kind of toy dog breed because of its flatter face, like a pug or some shit.
