You missed out on the best gen, but the difficulty was not something to write home about. You basically want to transfer it from a completed game to a fresh game. And in typical RPG fashion, the "harder" difficulty ends up being easier because the enemies give more EXP.

Every gen has its own unique features that are abandoned with the next gen, but I think gen 4 had the best ones: Pokémon following you in HGSS, day/night (with different OSTs) in Sinnoh, the special/physical split in the competitive scene...

As a magic player i'm used to rotating mechanics. But when it comes to pokemon i've never seen a rotated mechanic that either didn't fit with the themes of the following games or isn't just a stock improvement. And i must wonder why i can't see the difference.

I think the line should be drawn at what changes the core gameplay. A day night cycle doesn't change the core gameplay the same way "graveyard matters" mechanics like overgrowth or delirium affects magic. Nothing really affects the core pokemon gameplay besides the battle mechanics we've had over the last few generations.
I don't think following pokemon affects the core gameplay. It's such a minor change that only serves the under utilised friendship mechanic. And while difficulty technically affects the gameplay it doesn't affect the types of decisions you make in the same way a graveyard mechanic affects the way you utilise discard spells.

Then i remember triple battles and rotation battles. Interesting new ways to play, which, while a tad under thought, at least changed the nature of the game for that short period.

What mechanics would you introduce to keep the core gameplay fresh that you wouldn't have much of an issue being a staple of that game before being retired? Granted that by virtue of having their rotating mechanics they can now keep in the better generalised mechanics of old games.

They're making incredibly good decisions. Stop thinking from the perspective of designing video games and start thinking from the perspective of continuing the revenue exploitation of a powerful brand. If you only make lateral moves in terms of quality then you don't have to worry about fans sticking with an 'evergreen' game and so each entry can be easily replaced by a new one. That's also good in terms of development resources, because it means you can minimize the amount focused on maintaining existing content and maximize that spent on new(/'new') and marketable stuff.
I don't think objecting to the decisions of TPC and affiliates should ever be a matter of "WHY", they've shown time and time again that Pokémon is such an economically strong brand for very good reason.

I've seriously never been able to beat b2w2, the game just by has such wonky pacing like gen 2 kanto and challenge mode makes it Worse, but I'm too stubborn to turn it off because I'm desperate for a tough nuzlocke, but b2w2 has pushovers with loose design for every gym or boss but ghetsis
now if they had challenge mode in gen 4 or regular BW, that would have been righteous

Based anon. Soibois coddle B/W because the games were being bullied by everyone, so their Estrogen kicked in and they rushed to "protec the speshul babby". The only great thing it introduced was Infinite TMs and it wasn't even close to the gigantic step-up that Gen IV was from III. HG/SS are still the best games in the series and it's only been downhill ever since.

HGSS has a lot of content, a decent campaign, a great selection of pokemon, useful minigames with good rewards (I actually liked voltorb flip because I'm a stats nerd), and in my opinion, the best artstyle of the 2d games
The only thing holding the games down is the non-linear design making the level curse wonky
While I generally prefer Platinum, I don't think there is any denying that HGSS is the most complete pokemon game with the greatest breadth of content

Realistically, a difficulty setting only scales Pokemon levels. That’s not a lot.

I’d rather they just make the games more challenging overall. Super Mario Odyssey, a fucking kids game, has more challenging boss fights than Pokemon.

Typical of Game Freak placing good features in Pokemon, but making them extremely cumbersome or frustrating. At least you can hack in the difficulties with PKHex, but that still doesn't justify having to go through an entire playthrough just to go through a somewhat harder adventure.
